walking with a group

Finally I got organised today to go to Ruffey Lake Park with Cindy's Walk and Talk group! It's been too long since we managed that.

We had a lovely time with all the familiar dogs.

I thought of Honey when we encountered a graceful young Great Dane.

He decided he'd like to join our group.

And who was going to say no to such a handsome boy?

Of course, all the bigger dogs in our group thought they should show him how to romp and play.

But Penny preferred to stay back from all the excitement.

The lovely visitor walked with us for quite a while, but then he and his human had to head for home.

How cool that you met a Dane! I wonder if it's anyone we know from our Australian Dane group on Facebook...did you catch the Dane's name??

proud womon, I thought he was just gorgeous, but I must admit that to me Penny is the most beautiful dog in the world.

Looks like everyone had fun on the walk!

Lassie and Benjie, all the dogs had fun in their different ways, I guess.

Such a fun time, wish I could say same for our outings at the moment. Unfortunately Archilles (9 month border collie) has taken to escaping and wandering. His brother sits and cries to alert me he has escaped (jumped 6 foot fence)then cries till we locate and return archilles. So i am scared to go to beach with them at the moment and beside myself with what to do to tame his behaviour. Any suggestions???

Oh, therigatha, what a problem!

I've been to dog events where dogs show how high they can climb a fence, and it looks as if you have a champion.

I'm certainly no expert, but I think you have to look at why he wants to leave. Maybe he has too much spare energy and could benefit from some extra learning to tire him out physically and intellectually.

Are there any dog sports in your area, clubs you could join? Maybe flyball would be his thing. Or I've heard it's possible to go to special places where working dogs practise the things their genetics drive them to do, like herding.

It might be worth a call to Dogs Victoria, to see if there is any activity you could join locally. I had a look at their website, http://www.dogsvictoria.org.au/ and there is a long list of sports. The other place to begin might be to find a Delta-qualified canine specialist to help you. Their website is http://www.deltasocietyaustralia.com.au/about/delta and at the bottom there is a link to look for a dog trainer in your area.

I think you are already walking the dogs, but at this stage of their life they might need about two or three hours' walking each day, over the length of the day. (You would certainly get fit!)

I forget where your pups came from, but what about a call to the breeder, if available?

How about, if all else fails, a search on the Net around the question 'My dog keeps escaping from our yard?' You might get some ideas from others. (There's a depressingly huge number of sites discussing this, but there might be exactly the right answer for you hidden in them.)

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer. My only other thought is that your dogs are young, so maybe the problem will ease with time...
