Peppa has had frequent tummy upsets and visits to vets, and we seem now to have found foods that she can stomach. </p><p>And, best of all, we've found that her appetite is improving and she will take food as training rewards.</p><p>Consequently, we're able to play in the kitchen with the toys I bought from K-Mart. </p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzfO6-JV6gHlhRw2przLcFMooKETZdJWR87pBnV5zRpTrMk2uLYJuTScHbTnoJ1-X7VZmUxFicPmpnGug2iZA' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br /><p></p><p></p><p>At the moment, I'm rewarding for simply not being scared by the new objects in the house. I was surprised, after fifteen years with phlegmatic Penny, to realise that Peppa is a totally different personality, who needs lots of time to adjust to novelty. (Penny thrived on novelty!)</p><p><br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-26375594733865218312023-09-19T17:47:00.001+10:002023-09-19T17:47:13.989+10:00Peppa in 2023<p> I thought I'd post something today, in the hope of keeping this blog going. </p><p>Life with Peppa is quite different to our previous times with Penny, but that's to be expected, as they are very different dogs.</p><p>Peppa is not a morning 'person', and sometimes sleeps or snoozes until late in the afternoon, after which she's ready for a walk or some play. </p><p>In the evening, she's happy to sit on the couch and watch tv with us, and if we turn to Dog TV, she enjoys that too.</p><br /><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgzLd3KhGpzaVTPJsY9dpfPG5B8x9Xkoubqvl5N0N15W419PZcgzly_JEDC3b3U3qdCm0BoXfjbcHL_x46qV-mmX9_NeO2xgeYCbeoh6Pbo4XVNrQDlDqmzFmY6n9yfCfqU1PFWANJSowf4V3Z5hPjr6ZjHbmqzKLeMTZ2Zc0pMGJDKIPeQuZKI2l2wKc/s4032/IMG_9424.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgzLd3KhGpzaVTPJsY9dpfPG5B8x9Xkoubqvl5N0N15W419PZcgzly_JEDC3b3U3qdCm0BoXfjbcHL_x46qV-mmX9_NeO2xgeYCbeoh6Pbo4XVNrQDlDqmzFmY6n9yfCfqU1PFWANJSowf4V3Z5hPjr6ZjHbmqzKLeMTZ2Zc0pMGJDKIPeQuZKI2l2wKc/s320/IMG_9424.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br />parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-88493965898392913742022-10-12T19:56:00.002+11:002022-10-13T21:28:23.633+11:00Re-reading my own old blog posts<p> Peppa raced out the door this afternoon when our neighbour called, and we did our usual heart-searching about our awful standard of dog training. </p><p>And then I began to wonder whether we had the same issues, so many years ago, when we had Penny living with us. Our vet agrees with us in referring to her as 'Saint Penny', haha. In comparison to Peppa she was indeed a saint.</p><p>I thought I'd look back at <a href="http://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2007/08/" target="_blank">my own old posts from 2007</a>, when Penny was around the age Peppa is now. And I'm finding it not only entertaining, but also actually helpful. </p><p>One thing I'm noticing is that Peppa is more of a digger than Saint Penny was. I might have made an error of judgment in letting her 'help' me when I was weeding around the strawberries. She sure did love digging that big hole! It was a bit of a pity that a few of the strawberry plants ended up strewn around the area. But hey, she had fun, and it wasn't all that hard to replant the ones she removed.</p><p></p><p>I guess we'll find out soon if I've created a 'digging monster'. <br /></p><p>I'm going to do a search on my old blog for references to digging and see what comes up. In the meantime, I'm intending to scroll through fifteen years of Penny's blogs to see which links still work and make a note on each post as to which links are no longer viable. <br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-3585910912515992432022-07-13T16:26:00.002+10:002022-07-13T16:50:59.369+10:00Lhasa apsos, cones on heads and grooming<p> When Penny died, it took me four months to even think of<a href="https://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2020/07/a-timeline-of-grief-for-beloved-dog.html" target="_blank"> continuing this blog</a>, and for a while I just added the occasional post to keep it alive. And to keep Penny alive on the internet. (She's alive forever in our hearts.) </p><p>And then we made the enormous decision to bring another dog into our household. During the worst of the lockdowns here in Victoria in Australia, many people discovered the joy a dog can bring, so we had difficulty getting an older rescue dog. Given my age (<i>not too young</i> is what I'll say), it was a momentous decision to start over with a puppy.</p><p>But what joy she has brought us. </p><p>And what a further education in living with a dog. I thought I knew so much about dogs, after fifteen years with one. Now I realise each dog is a new experience. Getting a lhasa apso puppy was a tribute to the fact that we thought Penny had been a lhasa.</p><p>Well, no.</p><p>Lhasas have special coats. Just because Penny <i>looked</i> like a lhasa does not mean she was one. The groomer warned us. 'Don't think this will be like caring for Penny. She didn't have a thick coat. It was fine and easily managed.'</p><p>Yep. She was so right. Peppa's coat is a whole new ballgame.</p><p>Recently she had an operation on her right front paw to remove <a href="https://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2022/07/covid-and-dogs-with-grass-seeds-in.html" target="_blank">a grass seed</a> buried inside it. </p><p>While the weather was good, sunny and dry, we coped. But once the winter rains set in, we didn't go so well. It eventually turned out that the bandaged foot had healed well, but had got wet under the bandage and needed more time to recover. So, the cone went back on. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgewQTSngVutv4_OPLR2JrmcBIehITY7TxIzkex8MCMks4xsjpCt3BHeu3VV9Got3N9SI0WyyEYk05-NKFvKDNWIYx2dXxzia-B_E1Uo_bsS4qUt3J4bZihFc1C5J8WyonxRR3dT5UQ8eTWWKqWdRlmeJ0yH9pjg5kWRtDyGxQG00hvgekisoFMxW6Q/s2968/IMG_6837.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1867" data-original-width="2968" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgewQTSngVutv4_OPLR2JrmcBIehITY7TxIzkex8MCMks4xsjpCt3BHeu3VV9Got3N9SI0WyyEYk05-NKFvKDNWIYx2dXxzia-B_E1Uo_bsS4qUt3J4bZihFc1C5J8WyonxRR3dT5UQ8eTWWKqWdRlmeJ0yH9pjg5kWRtDyGxQG00hvgekisoFMxW6Q/s320/IMG_6837.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>The dreaded cone... </p><p>If you've seen <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1049413/" target="_blank">the movie 'Up</a>', you'll know it as the Cone of Shame. When I started to feel better (and was not required to quarantine), I took Peppa for a walk in a local park. It's winter here, of course, and the grass in the park was mowed and short, but I think that was the day Peppa got a seed in her paw. </p><p>At one stage, after playing vigorously with lots of friendly pups, she lay down and didn't want to walk. I thought she must be exhausted. In retrospect, I ask myself why a healthy young pup would be exhausted by some play. Now, with 20/20 hindsight, I think she might have had a grass seed stuck in her paw. </p><p>I'm resolved to check her paws after every outing to a grassy area.</p><p>So, she began to limp. We went to the clinic and the vet on duty checked her and thought perhaps she had broken a toe. An x-ray ensued, and it was sent off to an expert for another opinion. While we waited, we came home with a cone on her head and pain relief medication - Metacam. </p><p>She sat around staring morosely into space, and the pain relief injection she'd been given at the vet seemed to have spaced her out so completely that she couldn't even keep her legs under her and kept swaying and sinking to the floor. Such a stressful day.</p><p>I took the cone off, because she wasn't paying any attention to her foot. And I didn't give the Metacam because I thought she wasn't in pain. (I've since been told it was an anti-inflammatory also, so I guess I should have given it.)<br /></p><p>Back to the vet clinic a few days later, for an examination by our usual vet. He couldn't see any sign of what the problem was, but suggested an operation to open the swellings (two on top of her toes and one between her pads). It was organised for two days later.</p><p>What a relief it was when the operating vet called to say that after a long search she had found a grass seed buried in the flesh of the paw. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtwzTXSCSxTTd1X3xomwblFa3J8H37he_vtx2l3r2ze7iLRv0ZhXphNknu9S1USH7V2XAbyLDYw1K8tiiW0Eczr-nKdKul7BTp8DK-oBhEuwY8gyqumIt8OnaJQ0IQ6rRVxLOrNtDSBW1hsm-tvWsZ7-NXVHx9JEhvzSgq6uU7k1MZ3IB4tD0dxSCk/s4032/IMG_6795.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtwzTXSCSxTTd1X3xomwblFa3J8H37he_vtx2l3r2ze7iLRv0ZhXphNknu9S1USH7V2XAbyLDYw1K8tiiW0Eczr-nKdKul7BTp8DK-oBhEuwY8gyqumIt8OnaJQ0IQ6rRVxLOrNtDSBW1hsm-tvWsZ7-NXVHx9JEhvzSgq6uU7k1MZ3IB4tD0dxSCk/s320/IMG_6795.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><p>So, home again with pain medication and antibiotics and instructions to keep the bandaged foot dry. Hmm...that meant no walking in our jungle of a back garden, which at this time of year is damp with dew for most of the day.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEwQIqwrUWLP64QATwhmnvybKcLhSTA4GSB7ZJMYsBsjzV3u2Q8FPTuKuRmUlF3DZfF3z_J5A_-O17nUG1pTEqWm3UL404N5RQt9hyXnaIKj3sWaDkuwSPRya9-87kdXJPWRWvGkelJThqGbBlKVRup_fdIFzgPzn3Ia-oQsK4GJ-8GYkMqrAkAQEa/s3086/IMG_6801.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2890" data-original-width="3086" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEwQIqwrUWLP64QATwhmnvybKcLhSTA4GSB7ZJMYsBsjzV3u2Q8FPTuKuRmUlF3DZfF3z_J5A_-O17nUG1pTEqWm3UL404N5RQt9hyXnaIKj3sWaDkuwSPRya9-87kdXJPWRWvGkelJThqGbBlKVRup_fdIFzgPzn3Ia-oQsK4GJ-8GYkMqrAkAQEa/s320/IMG_6801.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>All was going well until last night when I noticed Peppa had removed the bandage and dressing. So, off at midnight to the Animal Emergency Clinic to get it rebandaged.</p><p>But what a surprise awaited us there! It was fortunately a quiet night there, so the usual offering of stressed and suffering animals wasn't as bad as it can be. And who was there?</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguSOShAOzTB5BzelcKszBCi6wMDidHTEKwfDcmmrLdttqsu7P16uMtjhnDZFeZtUzbL8ovlP1acCBygso7HrT49bqsvK_uKVX6KggiI655oBbig1og2UptmyDBGUisVOr-vPs-GT91jUHKRbp02ZSphcHqCDs_I0jZbr6n51vZ026wKChIy5wUTYY-/s4032/IMG_6799.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguSOShAOzTB5BzelcKszBCi6wMDidHTEKwfDcmmrLdttqsu7P16uMtjhnDZFeZtUzbL8ovlP1acCBygso7HrT49bqsvK_uKVX6KggiI655oBbig1og2UptmyDBGUisVOr-vPs-GT91jUHKRbp02ZSphcHqCDs_I0jZbr6n51vZ026wKChIy5wUTYY-/w209-h278/IMG_6799.jpeg" width="209" /></a></div><p>The first Lhasa apso we have ever met! So exciting. He's a Golden, and looks a lot like Peppa, so we were very pleased to have it confirmed that she is also a Golden (which is what she was sold to us as). And the owner knew the breeder we had got Peppa from and said she's a good breeder, which made us feel even better. </p><p></p><p>So a good ending to a stressful evening. Peppa has a nice new bandage on and we'll continue to keep it clean and dry (here's hoping) until we go tomorrow to have it checked. The vet nurse at AEC says it's healing well.</p><p>The other owner has also had a grass seed removed from his dog, so we're warned to be ever-alert after walks. He said it's because of their thick fur that they tend to pick up grass seeds.</p><p>Forewarned is forearmed.<br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-78049733596237347442022-04-25T21:01:00.003+10:002022-04-26T03:29:01.744+10:00training a lhasa apso<p> When we brought Peppa into our lives, we knew it would be necessary to get her used to grooming. So we did our best, and she's used to being up on the table getting special attention (and extra special treats) every evening. Fortunately, she loves it. We did come up with the theory that she had seen her mum and dad being groomed and thinks it's part of being a grown-up dog. Who knows what goes on in the clever little head?</p><p>She's more clever than we thought she would be, and has trained her people pretty well. Here are some of the favorites:</p><p>1. Jump appealingly up onto the human's legs and allow said human to stroke your head and tickle you behind the ears, at the same time slo-w-ly, quie-t-ly stealing a handkerchief or tissue from their pocket. If tissue, tear it to shreds and enable them to get some isometric exercise bending to collect the shreds. If a handkerchief, mouth it dramatically as if you're going to swallow it and might subsequently need to go to the amazingly expensive Animal Emergency clinic. Wait until the human races to get you a super-nice treat and willingly '<i>give</i>' the hanky to them in exchange for the treat, and get praised for being so co-operative.</p><p>2. Whenever you see a baby gate left ajar, race into the forbidden room and ostentiously wait in the doorway for the command to come '<i>this way</i>' and receive a treat for your obedience.</p><p> </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizLyoIy26DaATDLnFc-ZdEUVjvNa2YKr-hDwsjZ2eXv9aldsPX6Nr6PaTSGZMHs9StxRr13o1rhDm3bPW8FcLxju-zTYL-_87Go26Pie4gNSZDOc1_Ndn16X5FgbvhyfJW1Rsb9Lki4T0i5o4n7rZbiEpd3iJeMEiktSPxOmzmqCnvBF4QuVfuaQfj/s4032/IMG_6520.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizLyoIy26DaATDLnFc-ZdEUVjvNa2YKr-hDwsjZ2eXv9aldsPX6Nr6PaTSGZMHs9StxRr13o1rhDm3bPW8FcLxju-zTYL-_87Go26Pie4gNSZDOc1_Ndn16X5FgbvhyfJW1Rsb9Lki4T0i5o4n7rZbiEpd3iJeMEiktSPxOmzmqCnvBF4QuVfuaQfj/s320/IMG_6520.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>3. Go out into the backyard and bellow at the top of your voice at any movement in the adjoining apartments and wait for the command to '<i>come</i>'. Race in and get a treat. </p><p>I suspect she's working on a few more commands for the humans to obey. I'll report when she has us even more under her control. <br /></p><p>Oh, and now that I have a close look at that photo I posted, I think I'd better get off this computer and do that grooming. Obviously today was a rather exciting and messy playday. <br /></p><p> <br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-27191432517092266212022-04-19T23:11:00.003+10:002022-04-19T23:11:47.333+10:00Lovely rain<p> I was beginning to wonder if we were slipping once again into drought, despite the predictions that La Nina would give us a wet autumn (or some such thing that I don't quite remember). But the lovely rain has come and is staying all week.</p><p>Which brings me to the subject of dog-walking. I remember our vet once saying a dog must at least 'leave the property' each day. Well, in a most unusual event, Peppa didn't go for a walk today.</p><p>We did walk yesterday, even though it rained all day. We went to LaTrobe University and walked around under the shelter of the raised walkways. I wouldn't normally go there, but it was a holiday - Easter Monday - and I thought it would be okay. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHkNMVKUq1NBuZKP5MvC8vgRAAjEVoewxFqPcYVidqwtQJ6Imk6fVD-doPFjOlGvvXLp-vR-OgVkCTDIPLEzMHXwHkb7_uC-Ezy4OVt9mzjcZWd1PSHpTfPVfQ0egq0KPSA4fVD7c_TL1OPoxQ2B-Dfzv1LyY_YCzyowjPwDy8DKsl8I-Af4poPi5c/s4032/IMG_6496.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHkNMVKUq1NBuZKP5MvC8vgRAAjEVoewxFqPcYVidqwtQJ6Imk6fVD-doPFjOlGvvXLp-vR-OgVkCTDIPLEzMHXwHkb7_uC-Ezy4OVt9mzjcZWd1PSHpTfPVfQ0egq0KPSA4fVD7c_TL1OPoxQ2B-Dfzv1LyY_YCzyowjPwDy8DKsl8I-Af4poPi5c/s320/IMG_6496.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8n0hgulVnM2NyPYIdC_HW4KquoMkUtHLOiSoy7z8BBoNO2iUzPMLdXmWvmQr2nXVtmQXAKVxbGo7sItCIAVvgdKYRUXJnBZKYrAV5E9g1oTduRj6X9pzc4lxUPCDUb8ls4qNja2HIe4BLbZ-wXGOhGZTW34cTZbc44Dg3A5_u6ERoyfiiuAb7BqQy/s4032/IMG_6497.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8n0hgulVnM2NyPYIdC_HW4KquoMkUtHLOiSoy7z8BBoNO2iUzPMLdXmWvmQr2nXVtmQXAKVxbGo7sItCIAVvgdKYRUXJnBZKYrAV5E9g1oTduRj6X9pzc4lxUPCDUb8ls4qNja2HIe4BLbZ-wXGOhGZTW34cTZbc44Dg3A5_u6ERoyfiiuAb7BqQy/s320/IMG_6497.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><p>Having no walk today has proved Peppa is adept at entertaining herself. She has spent the evening jumping all over us and trying to drag our jackets off, racing out the back and barking piercingly at any movement, chewing anything within reach and generally being annoying, to be frank.</p><p>I realised it was my fault for not giving her the opportunity to go out today. Lesson learned. However, it did also make me realise that we're not doing enough training to allow her to use her intelligence. So, later this evening, we spent twenty minutes training.<br /></p><p>She surprised me. We revisited: weave between my legs/sit (and wait for the release word)/ walk nicely beside me on my left/ find a treat hidden at the other end of the house/ drop/and...best of all, free shaping where I put an empty cardboard box in the middle of the kitchen and praised any looking at the box or touching it with her nose.</p><p>I'll admit I've been underestimating her and forever comparing her with Penny, who was a delight to train. It turns out Peppa, too, wants to use her brains. It's just that she's not really in the business of trying to please the humans. She lives <i><b>with</b></i> us, not <i><b>for</b></i> us. I guess we should have known this, having read up on Lhasa apso personality traits before she came to live here.</p><p>Now I'm going to look back through my old posts to look at the training we routinely did with Penny. A great reason to revisit Penny's lifetime with us. It will be sad but worthwhile.<br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-74796191283640069362022-04-09T22:43:00.007+10:002022-04-09T22:43:56.369+10:00helping in the garden<p> Autumn is my favorite time in the garden, and I think Peppa is also enjoying her first autumn in this world. Here she is helping us install the new wormery tower under one of the apple trees. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvV--Yv0fXLaSsy8rdiR78AUsHMnqlHGjqF-NCO1maIZxyWioAvMrtPHEN5Dlvf_51EpJr9feqgPMWMz4W9Tp_f46Ch6jlMSuOjBSwh6tExs2SiRSBGvF5Lw6aCBrb_XKT-T8zjSPv_aKoTkyyAZaAdVFB6fA7H4hhHW5LhYIFcUBgdniwOB1aWDPy/s4032/IMG_6465.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvV--Yv0fXLaSsy8rdiR78AUsHMnqlHGjqF-NCO1maIZxyWioAvMrtPHEN5Dlvf_51EpJr9feqgPMWMz4W9Tp_f46Ch6jlMSuOjBSwh6tExs2SiRSBGvF5Lw6aCBrb_XKT-T8zjSPv_aKoTkyyAZaAdVFB6fA7H4hhHW5LhYIFcUBgdniwOB1aWDPy/s320/IMG_6465.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>Some household members seem to think the new wormery is too colorful, but I love it. Here's hoping the worms enjoy coming and going through the holes under the soil. I was thinking of using it to process pet poo, but after a little research I decided to go with my reservations, as it's in an area where we grow food. I still think the only thing we can do with Peppa's poo at this stage is put it in bags and drop it in the rubbish bin. </p><p>One site I looked at suggested putting it in the household toilet and flushing it like human waste. I'm not sure about that either. On the other hand, it would save on plastic bags going to landfill.<br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-65636164648285760452022-04-06T19:37:00.000+10:002022-04-06T19:37:04.225+10:00<p> We've enjoyed the first two episodes of <a href="https://iview.abc.net.au/show/dog-s-world-with-tony-armstrong" target="_blank">A Dog's World With Tony Armstrong.</a> In the most recent one, called 'Super Senses' , he looked at studies that investigate whether certain breeds have common behavioural characterists. They concluded that this is probably true to a certain extent, but individual experiences and individual personality traits also play a part.</p><p>Well, given that we had researched Lhasa Apsos before we bought Peppa, I suppose it should be no surprise to us that she's so completely different from our beloved Penny, who died in 2019. </p><p>We didn't realise at the time that Penny was a dream dog in terms of her trainability. Peppa is more of a challenge, to say the least. If she's out walking and sees something interesting, she's deaf to any human voices and impervious to the lure of any treat. </p><p>So it might be quite a long time before we'd trust her off lead. On the other hand, it's wonderful that she's quite happy to trot along with us on lead, and as we have a big yard, she gets plenty of chances to zoom around. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXaWePJYMzTnpO56YxOpTYvUoqJG448DL1ZMlcDPgtsWECrFUuj69Zj0PqZD3KwZxcujK0jTVqPd27rr-VR69zulcDVB1kcb4tz5YVLozrS92s1_XYjCtZku5gshL0IdfOauengi4XYAMGdp9WWmyeg3exIwi2UDoGCnM7jBuk0uzWzw_-bDxj36KW/s2919/IMG_6406.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2919" data-original-width="2476" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXaWePJYMzTnpO56YxOpTYvUoqJG448DL1ZMlcDPgtsWECrFUuj69Zj0PqZD3KwZxcujK0jTVqPd27rr-VR69zulcDVB1kcb4tz5YVLozrS92s1_XYjCtZku5gshL0IdfOauengi4XYAMGdp9WWmyeg3exIwi2UDoGCnM7jBuk0uzWzw_-bDxj36KW/s320/IMG_6406.jpeg" width="271" /></a></div><br />She is an independent learner, though. There's one room she's never allowed into (haha! she says, I'm quicker than lightning, so try stopping me slipping in when you open the baby gate.) She's decided if she creeps in when you aren't aware, she can sit at the gate and wait to be given the command to emerge, at which point she gets a nice treat.<br /><p></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-15250429735102613422022-03-15T12:07:00.002+11:002022-03-15T12:07:13.624+11:00<p> Just a quick update on Peppa to keep this blog alive. She's had ongoing issues with her eyes, but a couple of courses of medications seem to have settled the problems for now, and keeping up with the facial grooming helps. </p><p><br /></p><p>We're bemoaning the fact that she's not well-trained, and today I thought, 'Well, whose fault is that?' So off on a short training walk in the street, with lots of high-value rewards. She was great. She does get a walk every day, unless the weather is really against us, so it's not as if she doesn't get lots of stimulation. But sometimes it can be easier to let her just roam at the end of the lead. Lazy humans!</p><p>In general, she's a delight. If you don't mind sock-stealing... </p><p>As you can see, butter wouldn't melt in her mouth:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhAp2zPfmdKyo4FHQ7X5y0yROvNwR544jZerew_62tG8BFtVk3oYn9nDTAFwbk5mqxvsTJcGf5e66RexjCPXVUhsZX61nKTVokqgt_U_b0yOKtFZ93mBDq0osXoQWMcWRsIiycYQyRA64XEbfwSEpHToVomNMrBbps6Fla1y-DweQNRau5hITDZ9rtx=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhAp2zPfmdKyo4FHQ7X5y0yROvNwR544jZerew_62tG8BFtVk3oYn9nDTAFwbk5mqxvsTJcGf5e66RexjCPXVUhsZX61nKTVokqgt_U_b0yOKtFZ93mBDq0osXoQWMcWRsIiycYQyRA64XEbfwSEpHToVomNMrBbps6Fla1y-DweQNRau5hITDZ9rtx=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-40662122117293766912022-01-09T20:51:00.001+11:002022-01-09T20:51:11.093+11:00a cat and a lhasa apso<p> Our neighbour has a cat. He wants to be near Peppa, and in fact <a href="https://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2021/06/peppa-has-joined-our-family.html" target="_blank">wandered right into our house </a>the day after Peppa came to live with us.</p><p>Peppa loves him. But the problem is that he won't let her come very close. One day, when Peppa was tiny, we went for an on-lead walk along the street and he accompanied us by walking alongside us up on the tops of the fences. </p><p>Peppa had conniptions and it was pretty nightmarish trying to stop her strangling herself on the leash. </p><p>Things have settled into a sort of truce, where he strolls around the perimeter of the house and she races around inside, looking out the windows or trying to bash her way through the screen door, if the wooden door is open. It's fun for her and entertaining for us. Sometimes I wonder what will happen when he eventually decides to let her approach him.</p><p>Well, today I discovered that she can play happily with a friendly cat. We came across a cat lying on the edge of a footpath when we were out for a walk, and these photos show what a lovely time the two of them had together:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgDamfhjmRibyuXQ5B0u4F7Vz_gVVZpfofdH7RizmtbNg6mm-3VpKgcxpjY1UFgSYR0cBOOfEWEH5MK5EvOZedboBMmHL6FhjJHgP0F23XFSeNsO0i50m4NbvuafOg3Z5-7MzpQqaQLs5pZD0MrHhJl6CZRRE8n6M_ZtQFx5jNJXJGo737sdZf481gC=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2349" data-original-width="3024" height="249" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgDamfhjmRibyuXQ5B0u4F7Vz_gVVZpfofdH7RizmtbNg6mm-3VpKgcxpjY1UFgSYR0cBOOfEWEH5MK5EvOZedboBMmHL6FhjJHgP0F23XFSeNsO0i50m4NbvuafOg3Z5-7MzpQqaQLs5pZD0MrHhJl6CZRRE8n6M_ZtQFx5jNJXJGo737sdZf481gC=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbGu2la-Qbku-GolCwCJdigK4L9c6_AV-5towwhlqP2wsjnENR2SvenvS1UcDH4uqvUoHZj240_AXJ0DTzrG7Pf_hb8Eaz04S_vj7yOtY6XVT_KNzQfzZ8eT9yySLS4HhoqmH9C0P8zyq3Z1Iu6VxDmgD6cB3L5SzWxi6uE8y3EMu-fU-0tvHoZLkk=s2912" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2678" data-original-width="2912" height="294" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbGu2la-Qbku-GolCwCJdigK4L9c6_AV-5towwhlqP2wsjnENR2SvenvS1UcDH4uqvUoHZj240_AXJ0DTzrG7Pf_hb8Eaz04S_vj7yOtY6XVT_KNzQfzZ8eT9yySLS4HhoqmH9C0P8zyq3Z1Iu6VxDmgD6cB3L5SzWxi6uE8y3EMu-fU-0tvHoZLkk=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhdzOzhWseUhAnFak54QXOlWZGAdk7Q4l1CQGVm2kFB1O4s8PsWz3a78afQqAGBbu7Y-OdTwZQXuIMTZOD0Lwxe6HV6dEjVgCi00Kbl_wWKmLS_nUJ9NYn3iSu-YmwGMkdn76cLSJNaBXAxdDqIkQMAOnXxtzRgyelihX0hSpi8FDeSv8H-MSLLGCM7=s507" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="401" data-original-width="507" height="253" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhdzOzhWseUhAnFak54QXOlWZGAdk7Q4l1CQGVm2kFB1O4s8PsWz3a78afQqAGBbu7Y-OdTwZQXuIMTZOD0Lwxe6HV6dEjVgCi00Kbl_wWKmLS_nUJ9NYn3iSu-YmwGMkdn76cLSJNaBXAxdDqIkQMAOnXxtzRgyelihX0hSpi8FDeSv8H-MSLLGCM7=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>So perhaps Mr Next-door and Peppa will get to play together sometime in the future.<br /></p><p><br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-22203867841616736772022-01-06T22:23:00.001+11:002022-01-07T22:35:11.624+11:00A lhasa apso puppy having fun in water <p> </p><p> Peppa had her first experience of water play two days ago and again
today. I had read that lhasa apso dogs don't like water, but we thought
it was worth a try.<br /></p><p>It has continued to be hot this week, so we wanted to get out the old pool Penny had loved. We put a sprinkler into it, so that the water was moving but not deep. </p><p>I found an old footstool that had flat legs that we thought would not damage the pool floor. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1733" data-original-width="2039" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh9N1TVNo8ouEBTfPtlkRTTQY7n3iz909jw2wypJIlJNRY2ft_OXwJehn97vjYzh4rSuRGTcKIIPa6_a6vAuWvhPB4BeLDE1F7PaBxWBINvu2TfA8zIrq_aCnAdTWCd1bllK_aOLocW71diH1j7oePiVqJ8tYftVLqyHhGasoclstWWG093ETJxPOUf=w249-h212" width="249" /> <br /></div><p> </p><p>An additional box outside the pool acted as a step for getting in.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhUAEenlsKdt_Izynq3a_3nwh3YRGUhQOKV-kvJDK1lmCHqZ9MgjHRXtc8NAFvQrtxMTFtKPpFaJ9jrzWY4Yx8vrYrs8bleduDmICLo37a4mJuhf3TIqbJ2wAe2Ou3vdKk3ZA0Eg9TSCO85fFe94pujDdPBt7pkFkw5Z2U7ARWzbk5pUirru5z3cD4b=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhUAEenlsKdt_Izynq3a_3nwh3YRGUhQOKV-kvJDK1lmCHqZ9MgjHRXtc8NAFvQrtxMTFtKPpFaJ9jrzWY4Yx8vrYrs8bleduDmICLo37a4mJuhf3TIqbJ2wAe2Ou3vdKk3ZA0Eg9TSCO85fFe94pujDdPBt7pkFkw5Z2U7ARWzbk5pUirru5z3cD4b=s320" width="240" /></a></div><br /><p>It was fun!</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxyg4m1yfROMz8iTJezBo8TLZbSeQ1iQsbrQNEC13mv20Y3GYMh5bmGkUY0VDPSzqtaHFWVQUG-VY76pRmV2Q' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br /> <p></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-49325495223915501892022-01-02T16:53:00.001+11:002022-01-02T16:53:00.221+11:00Snooza bed is still giving good service<p> It's great to see Peppa using the<a href="https://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2011/12/gift-for-penny.html" target="_blank"> Snooza raised bed that we bought for Penny </a>so many years ago. </p><p>Penny would only sleep on it if it had a cushion or blanket on it, and even on super hot days or nights wouldn't be happy without that covering. <a href="https://www.snooza.com.au/collections/small-dog-beds" target="_blank">Snooza</a> does say that their pet futon is cool, but I prefer the open bedding at the moment.<br /></p><p>I've read that the open mesh is a good way to keep a dog cooler, as the air can circulate around their belly and paw pads. I had read that one way to help a dog cool down is the use of a gel mat.<br /></p><p>It was a surprise to see how quickly she got started on using the gel mat - because it was quite a bother<a href="https://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2019/12/gel-cooling-mat-on-hot-day.html" target="_blank"> to get Penny to adapt to it </a>and she hardly ever used it.<br /><br />At first Peppa lay near it. I had read that it's a good idea to show her that a new gel mat can be a nice place, where you find toys and treats, so I tossed a couple of Ziwi treats onto it.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgHbbe6i_nW8ig15nQ6B2uQ1wqZ5p0FEf1q0NC1ml5qlzeq2sMxmkh48pNjz15ZlM3qgkfguPEMWzlni9CkGdsHkJDCyeCEPrfIxgDBpueMIGAfV849RB-yOppTeydS8O0lbovGbYElXHevaR6V0U0-X-m_FWkZeljnzAEbGdgfQNb7zAIs7Yd46RG5=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgHbbe6i_nW8ig15nQ6B2uQ1wqZ5p0FEf1q0NC1ml5qlzeq2sMxmkh48pNjz15ZlM3qgkfguPEMWzlni9CkGdsHkJDCyeCEPrfIxgDBpueMIGAfV849RB-yOppTeydS8O0lbovGbYElXHevaR6V0U0-X-m_FWkZeljnzAEbGdgfQNb7zAIs7Yd46RG5=s320" width="240" /></a></div><br />That worked nicely, especially when I added her high-tech toy (the insert from a toilet roll.)<br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi-zowAGyytmmh1Swq1sRoXu7CWV07nx1t8DkE0ldPfqom80V_uFJgw9tfMAsXe1bD24N5oTXOlZLekLVyHg5YgDyO3uzX37-esegtFEUEqE05fyyKyRdC_yg5E0Do7lZQWHOFH0WY4NHHZwW9T5vkzBjvGL9BOE0J1pgIj4uLtdRvhHMx2NmDCCqhR=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi-zowAGyytmmh1Swq1sRoXu7CWV07nx1t8DkE0ldPfqom80V_uFJgw9tfMAsXe1bD24N5oTXOlZLekLVyHg5YgDyO3uzX37-esegtFEUEqE05fyyKyRdC_yg5E0Do7lZQWHOFH0WY4NHHZwW9T5vkzBjvGL9BOE0J1pgIj4uLtdRvhHMx2NmDCCqhR=s320" width="240" /></a></div><p></p><p>So, there she was lying on it within minutes.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi9obQBsgYVrTRE5r6rCB1F9fICcefO63Hm31K6s3tZy1CMrPGxeSLwc3w2Nti3Oj_ATRmwWeh_XkT1qNdVjhaoCEjc1sw1OmV-UCXDVtJGvPf716jvxOm5seSxWPTpzDCsXP5gO1n7Z_06F5IaDovYeBjS6BFzxNSdsm4KbRxZQ5kZ2OkahJ0YchV4=s1748" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1264" data-original-width="1748" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi9obQBsgYVrTRE5r6rCB1F9fICcefO63Hm31K6s3tZy1CMrPGxeSLwc3w2Nti3Oj_ATRmwWeh_XkT1qNdVjhaoCEjc1sw1OmV-UCXDVtJGvPf716jvxOm5seSxWPTpzDCsXP5gO1n7Z_06F5IaDovYeBjS6BFzxNSdsm4KbRxZQ5kZ2OkahJ0YchV4=s320" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p>And soon she was stretched out with her belly on the cooling surface. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh2ZyA778UiigWl4v883Sira3iYWegazYUr_D7TZu2gtyw79Qy-KfZUejoAzrz9KroLHPbbpv7FnQAUGxoV9TS2mis_ksBC8US9chot62eQY50rYywi3-X8accfmdqFL8-ujxIaweGEyzpmG1OviIf0-blJgsq3hAFo_Q5hnrWwC4ILkg1BvDB9OXWF=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1641" data-original-width="3024" height="174" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh2ZyA778UiigWl4v883Sira3iYWegazYUr_D7TZu2gtyw79Qy-KfZUejoAzrz9KroLHPbbpv7FnQAUGxoV9TS2mis_ksBC8US9chot62eQY50rYywi3-X8accfmdqFL8-ujxIaweGEyzpmG1OviIf0-blJgsq3hAFo_Q5hnrWwC4ILkg1BvDB9OXWF=s320" width="320" /></a></div>Here's hoping she continues to use it.<br />parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-44193534438222318842021-12-30T22:40:00.002+11:002021-12-30T22:53:08.500+11:00Hot weather <p> The hot weather has finally arrived, after a lovely cool spring and early summer. When Penny came to live with us - all those years ago - it was high summer, so we adapted to living with heat. Now that Peppa is here, we're having to think about how a lhasa apso might cope with heat. </p><p> Here is a lhasa apso site we've looked at: <a href="https://lhasalife.com/how-to-keep-your-dog-cool-in-the-heat-wave/" target="_blank">Lhasa Life </a><br /></p><p>It's going to be a cool enough night, but it's predicted to be hot tomorrow. <a href="https://theconversation.com/how-hot-is-too-hot-heres-how-to-tell-if-your-dog-is-suffering-during-the-summer-heat-172957" target="_blank">This article about dogs and hot weather </a>has given us something to think about. It suggests one of the best way to cool down a hot dog is with tap water. We think we might deploy<a href="https://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2016/01/loving-our-new-doggy-pool.html" target="_blank"> the paddling pool </a>we bought for Penny in 2016, and see if Peppa will feel happy to paddle around. </p><p> <img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbty7VdRc3eex4wmjJLsnqJu_diYzYVKUe2wRFyukYhiwIrDDJNAiYKc3H4lpa3Yp_ErRuua43vJizkH3_Gbg9b2YTEp6Pe7cp3qFm6wBJ_2OASsdo1lMF46AYqhN18oN9eMASc1jdDv4/s320/dog+in+pool+1.jpg" width="240" /></p><p><b><i>Here is Penny having fun in 2016. </i></b><br /></p><p>Peppa, on the other hand, has conniptions when we bath her, so maybe she has a general hatred of water. But she does love to feel a spray of water from a tap or hose and prefers to drink running water rather than still water in a bowl. </p><p>It's going to be fun trying out the pool. So nice to be able to get it out of the shed and remember happy times with Penny.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-48789650352842769692021-12-21T23:05:00.004+11:002021-12-30T22:41:31.518+11:00Lhasa apsos maybe don't have an interest in guarding fruit trees<p> Peppa was sitting at the top of the steps on our back porch the other night, staring at something. I went over to see what it was, and she wandered away.</p><p>It was a giant rat, eating our pears on the tree, so big I thought at first it might be a possum. But the skinny tail gave its identity away. It ran off into some of the bigger trees and along the fence, after I came close. </p><p></p><p>Some guard dog. <br /></p><p>And today she sat in the same spot gazing at rainbow lorikeets as they nibbled more of the fruit. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhmQ8mo0THA1TFJtXJl3R0xtFB3eL0HgmN8LcAjS61OU6iVXrEOSfX-gHWKG1OOK6wnmSKm-ML4bmQ6GMFUf3CUgbUXr4hXHbHz2TFXiH64a8QdqpI1_rpIWMztby_ZFbpiLo2TOk_KPWu8UMucZHylURJNVGocmaU5WchyEGrE81HTnJLF4mJaO--n=s3530" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3530" data-original-width="2647" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhmQ8mo0THA1TFJtXJl3R0xtFB3eL0HgmN8LcAjS61OU6iVXrEOSfX-gHWKG1OOK6wnmSKm-ML4bmQ6GMFUf3CUgbUXr4hXHbHz2TFXiH64a8QdqpI1_rpIWMztby_ZFbpiLo2TOk_KPWu8UMucZHylURJNVGocmaU5WchyEGrE81HTnJLF4mJaO--n=s320" width="240" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>The tree is only a couple of metres high, and right alongside the
railing. She could practically have snapped up the rat or the birds
without even stretching! (Well, given that the rat was nearly as big as
she is, I wouldn't actually want her to try, to be quite honest.) </p><p>When I came closer, the birds flew up into another tree and chitterted at me in annoyance until Peppa and I went inside and the cheeky birds could resume eating our pears. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhwrGzlq0y2XON2p9vsSFTunP8YcyUOLN-I0WkgLFUs4l8vlKz7HQb_zOfvEbdPMugH_v7_8cw6UzYVrzuq7zE_ZJ6Clyib6bbtyQ2lqcIHW5Hds8dB8pox3xqZjSYzKQaWu7rNVZwNNNfgzwAMyvadigg_6AhqeFiXbHTm4bkD5nn5VdscGwtQoEmP=s2824" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2824" data-original-width="2176" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhwrGzlq0y2XON2p9vsSFTunP8YcyUOLN-I0WkgLFUs4l8vlKz7HQb_zOfvEbdPMugH_v7_8cw6UzYVrzuq7zE_ZJ6Clyib6bbtyQ2lqcIHW5Hds8dB8pox3xqZjSYzKQaWu7rNVZwNNNfgzwAMyvadigg_6AhqeFiXbHTm4bkD5nn5VdscGwtQoEmP=s320" width="247" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg-HOcpOvHsJ5-5GIK1a_JTokiUGaFWtC6r2xM2hkwLdH2OYX12LayY_KkmiiyfpQIj68-kbm9rEe_13HUj0YAzMp1poRis2QRLpE81i4kVsAYe-9SrKzz9eg1D66hd7N7qrOnEz93_VItNRQuK3vldYYWt9_wjkTVkaCDTDOkdIH_F6M_zNWhBTwry=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg-HOcpOvHsJ5-5GIK1a_JTokiUGaFWtC6r2xM2hkwLdH2OYX12LayY_KkmiiyfpQIj68-kbm9rEe_13HUj0YAzMp1poRis2QRLpE81i4kVsAYe-9SrKzz9eg1D66hd7N7qrOnEz93_VItNRQuK3vldYYWt9_wjkTVkaCDTDOkdIH_F6M_zNWhBTwry=s320" width="240" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-77326186321460880412021-10-08T21:29:00.001+11:002021-10-08T21:29:12.378+11:00Puppy play during Covid lockdown<p> Peppa is probably having an unusual puppyhood, given that the first months of her life are taking place in one of the longest lockdowns in the world. No puppy school for her. But since we're allowed to exercise outdoors (albeit of course wearing our masks), she's doing well. <br /></p><p>We walk with her mini dachshund friend Bosun when we can, but it has taken a while for Peppa to grow up enough to visit parks without trying to strangle herself on her lead, and without jumping all over any dogs she meets. However, we're getting there. <br /></p><p>She has at last walked with us off-lead, when we can find places that are not crammed with people and dogs taking that afore-mentioned opportunity to get out of the house. One new place we've found is a local school where the public is allowed to walk, seeing the students are doing home schooling. It's a terrific place, because it's completely fenced and has lots of different surfaces for her to walk on - grassed areas, asphalt, stony paths and soft mulch. I guess this is one positive aspect of the present troubles.</p><p></p><p>And today, for the first time, she met our nephew's puppy. We've been waiting for this opportunity - it was not possible when we were only allowed to travel five kilometres from home. But now, with the more relaxed travel rules, we finally did it.</p><p> The other pup is a mix, probably Border Collie and kelpie. A sweet-natured pup. By all accounts he's usually the submissive one in puppy play, but he's so much bigger than little Peppa that he could for once be on top in the roughhousing.</p><p>I would have felt a bit worried as the rough play went on and on and on, but it was obvious that Peppa and he were happy. Somewhere I've read that puppy play is okay if the two dogs are taking turns to be the one on top, and that was what was happening.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtCAwwRFeegkXIsWqsKDftMVwm_xCG59Bhvr9kaf9RBJgkU9nZ4NjeYr5wRJi_IAcws3m_Y1eHsTSA4KoDsAGvn6qFE47VaP50LMwRbKQ2w7R7yzOVWSu1yew3cFZMQj2ULQzxslBBXps/s333/tw+pups+2.tiff" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="333" data-original-width="240" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtCAwwRFeegkXIsWqsKDftMVwm_xCG59Bhvr9kaf9RBJgkU9nZ4NjeYr5wRJi_IAcws3m_Y1eHsTSA4KoDsAGvn6qFE47VaP50LMwRbKQ2w7R7yzOVWSu1yew3cFZMQj2ULQzxslBBXps/s320/tw+pups+2.tiff" width="231" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuPwVXXUZF_6Ku2YOWQldvLXlNKigi190haJgpdNiuL5THWoVow2XL2l0aoKma-MOOhKm-kx-GDmpDzmN70QOw3a8qOXcm7F73a84P4hyVDaDNvVP-iq7qw_7Q3oXhY1Kxk3YEB3cl3Ws/s292/two+pups1.tiff" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="292" data-original-width="244" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuPwVXXUZF_6Ku2YOWQldvLXlNKigi190haJgpdNiuL5THWoVow2XL2l0aoKma-MOOhKm-kx-GDmpDzmN70QOw3a8qOXcm7F73a84P4hyVDaDNvVP-iq7qw_7Q3oXhY1Kxk3YEB3cl3Ws/s0/two+pups1.tiff" width="244" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-85517159429362702842021-09-16T19:47:00.003+10:002021-09-16T19:47:33.146+10:00First bath in the hydrobath<p> Peppa had a big adventure yesterday when we tried out the hydrobath for the first time in her life.</p><p>Not a great success, as the loud machine that powered the spray hose was rather scary. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvAlfD0zTDwBUox50slDi7-2ADrZvhXlPrSyPrHh1uSwK_DY3N3QvbbkDqkkWhm4dOhPdpsqnzL4wVG5FCLfRkD-7BWo5hRSzq6T8XNVLHO94BbqRwkR9D96gYF5E8mauNvr193WTFEGQ/s1280/IMG_9796.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="853" data-original-width="1280" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvAlfD0zTDwBUox50slDi7-2ADrZvhXlPrSyPrHh1uSwK_DY3N3QvbbkDqkkWhm4dOhPdpsqnzL4wVG5FCLfRkD-7BWo5hRSzq6T8XNVLHO94BbqRwkR9D96gYF5E8mauNvr193WTFEGQ/s320/IMG_9796.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p> Even the offer of lots of treats didn't work, because she was so nervous she couldn't eat. </p><p></p><p>But we did discover, as we suspected 😉 that under all those masses of lhasa apso fur there was a skinny puppy. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU9lvTwB1YRNnkNJowOEtMTsK2S7KpA7bjcqrK0XDdL4f0IDDl4KXAMm2VK6WMZviWIr9kFxGKg2zD7S_5SONZqG8eAkI3qNzUt6lKox_WjCKMfiC4cExtL3jzzlnVExZjKx4DZ6wBMcE/s603/Version+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="483" data-original-width="603" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU9lvTwB1YRNnkNJowOEtMTsK2S7KpA7bjcqrK0XDdL4f0IDDl4KXAMm2VK6WMZviWIr9kFxGKg2zD7S_5SONZqG8eAkI3qNzUt6lKox_WjCKMfiC4cExtL3jzzlnVExZjKx4DZ6wBMcE/s320/Version+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>So we turned off the machine and just used a baby bath and jugs of warm water to complete the bath. </p><p></p><p>Afterwards, she had a wonderful time when we wrapped her in a towel to dry. Or is it that I'm starting to attend to every dog I see, because we're almost ready to bring another dog into our lives? I think that is the truth.</p><p></p><p>So we've started looking online for puppies. </p><p></p><p>Or maybe a dog will somehow enter our lives from left field. Who knows? We're open to that new family member now. </p><p>I wanted to post today to keep this blog alive, and in writing I realised the truth of our readiness to meet another dog.</p><p> <br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-89006060826308840202021-03-11T20:35:00.004+11:002021-03-11T20:35:51.489+11:00Penny's anniversary of death<p> One year of life without Penny and people ask, 'Do you think you'll get another dog?' </p><p>Well, maybe. But it will not be a substitute for lovely Penny. </p><p>We toasted her memory at dinner tonight and remembered how lucky we were that she entered our lives. Her calm personality enriched our household and her love of fun so often made us laugh. </p><p>Thanks, Penny.<br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-3145992562596461262021-01-12T10:56:00.002+11:002021-01-12T22:52:22.675+11:00Life goes on without Penny<p> I've been feeling low the last few days, and it's taken me until today to realise it's probably because yesterday was the tenth of what we call the 'Monthiversaries' of her death on 11th March 2020. </p><p></p><p>So I'm posting this, mainly for myself, to remember her:</p><p>best of dogs</p><p>beauty queen</p><p>agility dog <br /></p><p>doggy dancer</p><p>lure courser</p><p>beach goer</p><p>lounge lizard towards the end of her life</p><p>friend</p><p>lazy bones at times</p><p>ball chaser par excellence until her cruciate ligaments let her down</p><p>eater of anything - meat, vegetable, you name it</p><p>companion</p><p>best of dogs.</p><p> </p><p>Her <a href="http://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2010/01/tennis-ball-trees-are-in-fruit-once.html">'tennis ball' tree</a> is in full fruit, but with no Penny to protect the crop from the birds, we've been reduced to covering the fruit with bags. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5SySYLsmyRuPk3JQVffJ02bjauRM4dVEHNSMTK5MSsC0fc36Cf4tFPhoLaYmQoQG3ZQWzusZ7ng8qg4cp4GVO-_Z7RL6lryHdcq_8x86lHfs6K4jq-Xa0YW71bxayKJI9FoYcIEdkmiY/s1280/IMG_3830.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" height="433" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5SySYLsmyRuPk3JQVffJ02bjauRM4dVEHNSMTK5MSsC0fc36Cf4tFPhoLaYmQoQG3ZQWzusZ7ng8qg4cp4GVO-_Z7RL6lryHdcq_8x86lHfs6K4jq-Xa0YW71bxayKJI9FoYcIEdkmiY/w577-h433/IMG_3830.jpg" width="577" /></a></div><br /> <br /><p></p><p> But every walk is a reminder of how in her long lifetime she introduced us to the beauties of nature all around us. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj__a3FNC5CIdUwJibbRX1hk1vDZFsP8i0Cp5EfxPaIV_uO2YYPK5BEC0zKi8xu37KjGaz4tkET4t2ru1SrFbGAMUx-6jK_8k-u9QQY19Z94IcbQ6EhcN5YKqSWXlRjBgOILIpiYACmCs8/s1280/IMG_3644.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" height="434" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj__a3FNC5CIdUwJibbRX1hk1vDZFsP8i0Cp5EfxPaIV_uO2YYPK5BEC0zKi8xu37KjGaz4tkET4t2ru1SrFbGAMUx-6jK_8k-u9QQY19Z94IcbQ6EhcN5YKqSWXlRjBgOILIpiYACmCs8/w579-h434/IMG_3644.jpg" width="579" /></a></div><br /><p>Thank you, Beautiful Girl.<br /></p>parlancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11175843064324380048noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179993983134824252.post-83297862999025292732020-10-09T16:02:00.003+11:002020-10-09T16:02:26.631+11:00Penny's garden of remembrance<p>Penny's ashes are buried in her special spot, outside the glass door where she liked to lie and watch the world go by in her last months. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyZZknpuZfnrBfkWyp2bNgBvH3hk7qsagJRpQ0ywxiAyaJ0bnEpB3IOpNvhTKPbNo6avLlrxbcol0Dv4_jxOuiyt9qXpy9HoOG6jFZCP1J1oDO_iTrulrGRdlWQ3pVrNpfdPYmQrpaa94/s1280/IMG_3412.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyZZknpuZfnrBfkWyp2bNgBvH3hk7qsagJRpQ0ywxiAyaJ0bnEpB3IOpNvhTKPbNo6avLlrxbcol0Dv4_jxOuiyt9qXpy9HoOG6jFZCP1J1oDO_iTrulrGRdlWQ3pVrNpfdPYmQrpaa94/s320/IMG_3412.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p> At last it's time to plant the packet of seeds that came with those ashes - everlasting daisies. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYhsYI5hVeE5Fhbsssusn5Z1o6c46A0HbSmXh0ipdDK5aLXUI6AHLoWhDnViVyJ9Su_GGe6nfJdqYKGpwwqQ21jQKgFrlzjERhzGyDIPWxZRcij8ZU7bbQQgSuYYyMln9c5_7ToCGPmEA/s1280/IMG_3411.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="1223" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYhsYI5hVeE5Fhbsssusn5Z1o6c46A0HbSmXh0ipdDK5aLXUI6AHLoWhDnViVyJ9Su_GGe6nfJdqYKGpwwqQ21jQKgFrlzjERhzGyDIPWxZRcij8ZU7bbQQgSuYYyMln9c5_7ToCGPmEA/s320/IMG_3411.jpg" /></a></div><p>Now the ground is prepared.
