Good thing you didn't think the canoe paddles were sticks. If you tried to retrieve one of those canoe sticks-- you probably would have brought the whole canoe back to shore with you!
Slavenka, she is quite a good strong swimmer, but who knows what might happen if she went near the boats? You're right. It's better to stay close to shore.
