Penny learns to dig

Penny's never been a great digger, so it was quite a surprise recently when she started digging a hole at the beach. On that occasion she was with Byron, Cindy's chocolate lab. Penny thinks Byron is the smartest, best leader in the world, so I think she may have decided to copy him.

Well, during one of our recent walks on The Ninety Mile Beach, she outdid herself, copying Byron's trick of digging a hole to bury a tennis ball (or a stick).

 She dug...

and dug...

and dug...

and dug...

until she was satisfied.

  5. I've heard of digging a little hole in the dirt to make the ground a little cooler to lay down on. Butt that is one huge hole! I bet the ground was freezing cold with a hole that size!!! Good job Penny!

  8. Mary, I think the idea is to bury the ball, then at some stage it flies out of the hole, and then you get it and bury it some more. I'm not sure, though. It's some sort of 'secret dogs' business', passed down from one dog to another.

  9. Kari, here's hoping the digging behaviour only happens at the beach!

  10. Cardells, the whole digging episode was so cute! It was lovely to see a rather serious-minded dog having such a great time.

  12. Lassie and Benjie, I did wonder if she was digging to find a cooler spot, but on the other hand it was quite a cool day.
