Our very first shiitake mushrooms are emerging from the inoculated log, too. Very exciting! Penny wouldn't know anything about fungus being edible, because I've never given her any. I don't think it would be safe for her.
But something has been looking at the log, where it sits on a green plastic garden chair, because we noticed a fresh possum poo right beside it. Here's hoping that the poo fell from the tree above. I'd be disappointed if the possums pinched our mushrooms!

We've had asparagus but not much of it. Mom and dad love it so they're pretty stingy with us. We've never had mushrooms. Mom says she doesn't think they're a safe choice. What fun to grow your own though!

Pawsome that your garden is sprouting in winter. Mommy has a hard enough time getting plants to grow in summer.
Mitch and Molly, I've never specifically read that mushrooms are bad for dogs, but I would never give Penny mushrooms. I'm not sure why, but that's how I feel.
Lassie and Benji, we've been having a strangely warm winter here. It's turned into normal cold now, so maybe those little asparagus spears will die.
My Mum loves, loves, loves asparagus!!! You are lucky.
