great blog article on joint supplements and fatty acids for dogs

I was happy to see an article today at one of my favorite blogs - Dolittler. I've often mentioned this blog, written by a vet in the US. Today, most appropriately for my current concerns, she's discussing the role of supplements in ' thwarting the chronic inflammatory process we observe in joints'.

I love that word 'thwart'! That's what I want to do - stop Penny's pain before it begins.

Dolittler mentions a new product that combines fatty acids with glucosamine and green-lipped mussel extract. Given that I've just bought some melrose omega-3 liquid that says on the label that it's rich in omega-3 and omega-6 plant and marine essential fatty acids, and that I'm using Glyde, a super-expensive(sigh...) powder with the other ingredients she's mentioning, I'm feeling quite chuffed at reading her article.

Dolittler has a link to an article in Veterinary Practice News that says, in part:
researchers at Harvard Medical School have unearthed novel biochemical pathways and families of endogenous mediators derived from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids that not only prevent but help resolve inflammation.1 They named these mediator families “resolvins” (Rvs) and “protectins” (PDs), to connote their respective roles in controlling the acute inflammatory response and in effecting its resolution.

I think both Dolittler's post and this article are well worth studying.

I'll certainly drop by again, Bibi, as I love seeing snippets of daily life around the world and I've never been to Belgrade. Well, actually, now that I think about it, I think I might have passed through in 1973 on a ten-week camping tour of Europe, but that's so long ago I've forgotten all about most of it.

i have been thinking about Penny's limp and now wonder if her shoulder is out. Mind you a Vet should pick up on it if it is. there is a wonderful dog chiro called George Scoffield at Yuroke. it could be worth a check with him. charge about $10!!

Thanks for the post on joint supplements Parlance. Noah takes glucosamine as he tends to get very sore if he over does the running, always has.

Jabari, I went to see Tim Munro today and he gave her a very gentle massage therapy session. He noticed something that I knew about but had never given enough thought to - she tends to walk with her rear hips slung a bit to the side. He thought maybe that is in reaction to a front-end problem, as you suggest.
I'm going to keep an eye on it. She seems fine today.

An interesting thing was that he suggested vitamin supplements as well as the joint support and the omega-3 oils. I think it was vitamin C. I'll have to ask him again.

Hi, Denise.
Just an interesting extra thing about glucosamine. My sister (human family member) takes glucosamine for her arthritis-related problems but she gets sick if it's sourced from shellfish. So she takes one sourced from fermented corn. I've never heard of that in relation to dogs, but I guess it could be an interesting thing to know about.
