hungarian dogs dancing

Penny and I are having another go at the trick where she puts her chin down on an object, so we can do 'say your prayers'. We practised it some months ago and then forgot about it, but Cindy at K9 Kompany reminded us about it today. I thought I'd have a look at the Net to get some hints and came across a series of video clips from k9freestyler in Hungary k9freestyler in Hungary. They show a great range of dancing moves and the dog is fun to watch as his (or her) shaggy coat sweeps through the air with the energetic and happy movements.

In the meantime, I think I'll click and reward whenever I see Penny spontaneously put her chin down on anything, and see if that works as a refresher on what we learned.

Amber-Mae, we're trying to do better on all the old tricks, because we had a couple of weeks where we didn't do any training. I'll have to revisit all your old postings so I can brush up on how to do them.

Penny must look really cute saying 'prayers.'

Thanks for telling me about cleaning up pee/poop when Levi isn't looking. The logic of that makes sense.

That sounds like a fun trick! Mom is going to go to that place and look at the dogs dancing! Thanks. Can't wait to see pictures!

Rusty, I read your comment and suddenly realised I hadn't put the actual link in the post. It's there now.

Hi, Noah. I must confess that Penny doesn't have to even do any tricks to seem adorable to me. She just has to walk into the room!

Click training is new to me. What do you use for a clicker? I'm visualizing those toys we used to get in Cracker Jack but I'm sure that can't be what you mean. I'll bet Penny is having fun with her training.

Levi's Mum, you're right. The clicker is just one of those old toys. The ones we still have on sale here for children are usually shaped like frogs. However, the dog training sites usually sell a more substantial one that makes a clearer sound. There's a site called www.clicker.com that has heaps of information.

The idea is, generally, that you get a bag of tiny, tiny treats (don't want to make Levi fat!) and sit by him and click the clicker and give him a treat immediately. Do this on and off over a couple of days and he will look expectantly at you when you click. It's not a reward for doing anything, so just do it whenever he's doing different things. It's to teach him that the clicker means good things coming.

Does he know 'sit' already? If so, you could ask him to sit and when he does it- EXACTLY as his butt hits the floor, click and immediately give him a tiny treat.
If he can't do anything on command yet, you should have a look at the introductory games and activities on that site, because I don't think I can explain clearly here.
The idea of the clicker in general is that it's a sound that says to the dog, 'Yes, you did exactly the right thing and now I'm going to reward you." It would take too long to say something like that, so the clicker says it at exactly the right moment. It's a communication with the dog.

I hope this is helpful. I'm loving seeing Levi grow up and I know I have a deeper and more mutually rewarding relationship with Penny because we do tricks together.
