feeding a dog a raw diet that includes fish

Penny found something weird in her food bowl this evening. While her humans were eating their fish dinners, Penny was busy at her bowl long enough for them to think she was enjoying her meal of rice, beef leftovers and sardines. But she wasn't, because there was a strange creature staring at her.

It smelled good, though. So she decided to get it out of the bowl and roll on it. Her humans all leapt up from the table, yelling, 'No!'

Hmm... What to do with it?

She carried it over to her eating mat to think about it, but one of the humans' hands came sneaking over her shoulder to steal it away (and put it in the rubbish bin), so she had to crouch really, really low to guard it.

Even though she studied it carefully from different angles, it still didn't look like something a respectable dog would eat.

In the end, she decided it wasn't worth the trouble and the humans stole it away. The house rule is, 'Eat it if it's in your bowl, because you won't get anything else.' So all she got tonight was some left-over rice and a teensy piece of old cooked beef.

The bad news is, another piece of fish is going to appear in her bowl tomorrow.
The good news is, there'll be nice things mixed in with it, to make it less obvious.
The even better news is that the next bit won't have eyes.

If only she could be like Noah and family, and enjoy a fish meal properly! I belong to the Yahoo rawfeeding group and I'm convinced Penny will benefit from more oily fish in her diet.

There's an interesting discussion about fish in a dog's diet at Dogster.

Oh no Penny, the fishie is for eating not rolling on lol.
You need a large fish head to tackle.
Come to our blog, we've something for you.

I don't blame Penny for not wanting the fish head. I can't eat things with eyes looking at me either.

Levi's mom, I agree with you! We were having fish too and I was so put off by Penny's interaction with the eyes that I had to give my fish away to my sister.

I'm not a great fish lover, even without eyes, but I'm making an effort to eat it a couple of times a week.

Noah, you and your friends are wonderful fish eaters. I visited your blog and saw the lovely award. Thanks!

Hi Penny!

Scottie here...so nice to meet you! That's so cool that you're eating raw food! Mom is also a member of the same Yahoo group that your Mom is in...but she hasn't started me on raw feeding though, she's mostly lurking there to read about how much to feed, etc...stuff that a 'newbie' would need to know. Heh!

Hope your next meal will be better, and have a great weekend!

My dogs love to eat fish. I first a couple of minutes boil fish and then remove all
bones and give them the fish meat.

We're not sure we could eat that fishie while he's looking at us either, Penny!

Scottie, nice to meet you! I popped over and visited your blog and enjoyed it.

Slavenka, I got Penny to eat the middle part of the fish today, when I hid it in with some chicken livers. I'll try another little bit tomorrow. By the way, I'm still enjoying your jokes on your blog.

Maggie and Mitch, as I told Slavenka, I did get Penny to eat the middle part of a fish today. I don't know whether the eyes were the problem. We'll have to see.

Coming right over, Amber-Mae! We love your tricks.

By the way, Penny has had a little bit of sardine every day since then. Just no eyes...

I don't know about eating it, but I think I would like to roll on it too!

Dear Penny,
I don't like most fish but I do like my mummies tuna from a can.
Have you tried this?

Rusty, I've got a feeling that you would be excellent at rolling on fish, just as you are excellent at chasing squirrels, but think what it would do to your beautiful glossy coat. Wait a minute... isn't fish good for the coat?

I think I'd roll in it to at first. Sounds like common sense to me! But I have to admit, I'd eat it, fur sure!

Johann, Penny has eaten sardines since that day, but I've never been game to try fish with eyes. Maybe one day...
