dogs burying bones and Elocon cream for skin problems

Yesterday Penny enjoyed a nice old bone, one which she brought in from the garden. We can't figure out where it came from, because it seemed to be a lamb shank bone, and the last lamb shank she had would have been in January, or early February, given that we fed her the ultra low allergenic diet for months.

However old it was, she sure enjoyed it, chomping on it for more than an hour. She arrived back inside with a dirty face, so I guess some of it is buried out there again for later enjoyment.

It's so satisfying to be off the restricted diet!

We're wiping her vulva area with baby wipes each time we see her wee (who would have thought that buying a puppy could lead to having to do that?), and we have put Elocon cream or lotion on her vulva, paws and rear end for a week. Now we'll put the cream or lotion on twice a week.

So far so good - no bottom licking and no paw licking!

Glad to hear that the licking seems to have stopped!

Yeah, Honey is like that with disgusting, old bones too - she refuses to eat them fresh and has to let them - ahem - "mature" - underground for a couple of weeks before she'll deign to chew them! :-) I often laugh when people express concern about the "bacteria" in her raw diet...um, if they've ever seen what she will happily dig up and eat - and have no problems with either afterwards...those rotting, stinking bones...oh my God, her stomach really must be something else!!! :-)

Hsin-Yi, sometimes when Penny approaches with one of her old bones, we dive for cover, before ordering her out of the house and locking her doggy door until she's finished. Luckily, this one was so old it didn't even smell.

Slavenka, thanks. That is an interesting site. I see it says not to use the cream on the groin area, but I'll hope it is ok for Penny seeing the skin specialist knew where we were to use it.

I'm especially interested, because it has also been prescribed for me! (On the outside of my ears.)

Ask your vet if you can use Elocon on your dog. Do not use Elocon prescribed for humans on your dog. Elocon cream or ointment is a powerful topical steroid designed to reduce itching and clear up dermatitis, an allergic reaction in the skin. Too much of it can be absorbed into the skin, causing unwanted side effects. Doctors give very specific advice on its use, including not to cover the treated area with a bandage or anything plastic. You must be very careful to prevent your dog from licking it off, or he can get sick from the medicine.

Thanks for that comment, Jennifer. It's most timely, because we are using it once again, but only for a short period. I'll be very careful to use it lightly and only for the least time possible.
