is tuna safe for dogs?

I was told recently that I shouldn't feed Penny tuna as often as salmon, because tuna has a high level of mercury. I don't know much about that, but I do know salmon is certainly a bit expensive to be a regualr part of her diet.

So I was interested to read this article on PhysOrg.com (a science and technology news site) that some species of tuna have less mercury than others.

Hmm...I eat a lot of tuna. I thought it was just ok in moderation...

I think it's ok in moderation. After all, we eat it ourselves!

Yeah, but we also eat chocolate and grapes and onion etc...

I have never heard anything about Tuna being bad for dogs, but I've never looked into it either.

Doozer, I hadn't thought of it that way. Not everything we can process is as 'innocent' for dogs. Maybe we can process a little mercury but they can't. Thanks for the comment.

I was thinking in terms of mercury being bad for everything on the planet. I wonder if it's naturally occurring mercury, or whether it's some sort of human-caused occurrence.

I think I'll read that article more carefully. (It was rather 'scientific', so I just skimmed it rather than studying it.)

Hey, Noah, tell D I eat tuna too! We humans will just have to manage all the horrible things we put in our stomachs (like mercury) and hope for the best, but for you lovely dogs we are super careful.
