we over-vaccinate dogs in Australia

Recently I looked on the site of the Australian Veterinary Association for information about the optimum vaccination timetable for dogs. I've read many times that it is no longer considered necessary to vaccinate dogs every year, so it was great to see the recommendations of the AVA.

And I've noticed a similarly informative page at Roar Kingdom, the site of Dr RenĂ©e O’Duhring, a holistic veterinarian and Michelle Southall, a veterinary nurse.

Mom says they over-vaccinate dogs in the USA too. I was over-vaccinated doggie and got very sick one year and mom started reading lots of websites and she joined lots of groups and Mitch and I get only the vaccines that we need. No over-vaccinating for us - not any longer!

Love ya lots

Maggie and Mitch, I did read that many older vets still recommend the yearly vaccination, partly because they want to make sure the humans bring the dogs in for a check-up at least once a year. But I don't think that's a good enough reason.

Hi there Parlance, Dr Renee here! The change to the AVA policy on vaccination has been a long time coming, and unfortunately many Vets in Australia, and other parts of the world, are 'behind the eight ball' on this issue.
When thinking about vaccinating an animal, the patient's constitution, age, lifestyle, health and disease tendencies all need to be taken into account, and the risks vs benefits of each vaccine weighed up for that particular individual.
Vaccine protocols should be customised for every pet, and titre tests should be done more often than not! And of course it is still important to take your pet to see a Vet at least once a year for a health check.
You can read more about the holistic approach to vaccination here:

Oh, and glad to hear you have couch grass growing everywhere - Penny must be a very happy lady!
