hot days and play in the brown River Yarra

Today we headed off to the muddy Yarra early, because it was predicted to be more than 103 43 Celcius (that's about 110 Fahrenheit!). (Thanks, Mary, for pointing out that 103 Celcius would be rather hot.)

There I made an interesting discovery about the whirlwheel toy. You can pick it up with a stick if your dog won't bring it back on land. Penny always waits just in the water, ready for the second toy to be thrown. She won't put down the first until she is quite sure there's another one in flight.

Here's my patented method for picking up this toy:

And here's Penny hanging on to the first one, watching, watching, watching for the throw of the second toy:

103 Celcius sounds pretty hot! Did you mean 43?
Penny looks comfortable at least, nice and wet on a hot day. Do you get your feet wet or does the patented stick method prevent that?
I'm not looking forward to coming home to the heat - it is going up to 32 degrees F here today but hasn't reached it yet, it is about 21 degrees at present, so I am not rushing out to do my sightseeing.

Penny looks so cool in the water! I wonder how my Moscow Watchdog would like playing in lake.

The patented stick method only keeps the feet dry if she puts the toy close enough that I don't fall in the water.

Forgot to say, I think it was the hottest night on record last night. Not absolutely sure. So enjoy those cool (or do I mean freezing) New York days.

43 degrees Celcius is really hot. The temperature is rising here too. Time for a haircut.

That's a clever way of retrieving the whirlwheel toy.

Happy, I'm interested to know how much hair you get trimmed in the summer, so I've popped over to your blog to ask LS.

Moscow Watch Dog, I had never heard of your beautiful-looking breed before! What a handsome dog breed.

Since Happy has a single coat, I usually trim off 2-3 inches during the hot seasons. The usual length for her breed would be around 5-6 inches.

I think Penny has a double coat like all shih tzu breed.

Happy's hair grows quite fast so taking off 2-3 inches is not a problem.

Have you trimmed Penny's hair before? If you're worried it won't grow back as quickly, perhaps you might want to try taking off an inch or so for a start.

Penny's coat is looking really nice and shiny now.

Hiya! I/we love the pic with Penny and the green thingy... She looks so funny - big doggy grin. :)

Teal'c, I agree. She looks amusing standing there trying to decide whether to let go of the one she's got, in order to make me throw the second one. It's always a hard decision for her.

Thanks, Honey.

Serendipity, Penny is a cross between various breeds (we won't call her a mutt, lol), so she actually ended up with a single coat. I have had her belly clipped for summer in the past, and she's had a few "tidy-up" clips.

For some reason, this summer I just didn't get organised to have her clipped, but I think I must do so very soon.

I am going to look out for this toy while out buying her treats. Great idea and I am so glad you linked this post to your newer one!
